Week 6 05 April 2021 Assessment & Evaluation of ELT curriculum


Assessment instruments are many like quiz sets, assignments, projects, portfolios, journal logs, teacher made tests etc. These tools are used for assessment of learning and there are three types of it: diagnostic assessment is assessing students before learning to see their degree of knowledge. The second type of assessment is in-process evaluations of student comprehension. The final  assessment is summative assessment. Summative assessment is applied at the end of the education to see if the education was successful.


The format of the course and educational settings, learners’ needs, preferences of the teacher, institutional or curricular requirements, available resources are considerations in choosing an assessment tool.


Washback is the extent to which the introduction and use of tests influences language teachers and learners to do things that would not otherwise do not promote or inhibit language learning.

  Week 4 22 March 2021 Approaches to Syllabus Design  There are two approaches: Synthetic and analytic approaches. Synthetic approach covers structural, situational and functional syllabus whereas analytic approach covers task based/procedural, topic-based, skills based, lexical, mixed, notional, learner-generated syllabus.  In synthetic approach language is broken into parts to teach different parts of language and by a step-by-step procedure.As a result of this gradual accumulation,learners resynthesize the language. . In structural syllabus, each unit of learning deals with a particular grammatical structure and is identified with a grammatical label such as present simple etc. The core of STS is an ordered list of grammatical structures.  Simplicity, regularity, frequency, contrastive difficulty are some criterias to determine the grammatical content.  There are some reservations of STS like focusing only one part of language, structures are taught regardles...

  Week 3 15 March 2021 Approaches to Course Design  Students’ and society’s view of language learning is very important for an English course design. Needs analysis(learner profiles, special needs etc), objectives (for learners, for institutions, for sponsors), means (staffing, resources, variables, constraints), syllabus types, methodology, assessment are important aspects. We need to discover our learners' needs, consider the needs of curriculum, find coursebooks which cover needs,decide what kind of syllabus is needed, and maybe develop our own syllabus type.

  Week 5 29 March 2021 Needs Analysis & Situation Analysis Needs analysis involves choosing from the various procedures for conducting need analysis ( Questionnaire, self-rating interviews, meetings, etc) and selecting those that are likely to give a comprehensive view of learners’ needs and stakeholders’ interests. Decisions have to be made on the practical procedures involved in collecting, organizing, and reporting the information collected. There needs to be a clear reason for collecting different kinds of information. After collection, the results can still be impressionistic. There is no direct application of the information obtained from needs analysis to  a program design. Information has to be subject to a great deal of interpretation before it can be usefully applied in program planning.  Potential needs have to be prioritized.  By using needs analysis, an appropriate syllabus can be chosen.
